How early in a relationship do you talk about having myasthenia gravis?
I used to introduce myself like: “Hi! I’m Sarah, and I have MG. Do you know what it is?” 😅 I would tell almost every new person I met about it right away.
Until I realized that it sometimes became the lens through which people saw me. I felt like it could create pity, misunderstanding, or assumptions before they even got the chance to know me as a person.
So I started putting MG to the side and letting it come up naturally, when it becomes relevant in everyday life or when I actually need someone to know.
After living with this diagnosis for so many years, I realized that I was starting to connect it too closely with my personality and identity. And honestly, I don’t want that.
MG is a part of my life, but it’s not the first thing I want people to know about me.
I’m curious how others approach this, especially when it comes to new friendships or romantic relationships. Do you tell people right away, or do you let it come up naturally? 😊
