AGE AT Diagnosis
Posted by Community Member on February 14, 2025 at 3:02 pmI was and I am 87. I can’t tell MG symptoms from old age symptoms, except for breathing issues, which are improving with meds.

AdministratorIt’s great to hear that your breathing issues are improving with medication. Every bit of progress counts! It can undoubtedly be challenging to distinguish between symptoms of MG and those that come with aging.
Symptoms, including drooping eyelids, double vision, arm or leg weakness, difficulty swallowing or speaking, and pain, can overlap with normal aging. Keeping a journal of symptoms, when they occur, and what triggers them can help you and your doctor determine the cause.

MemberI was 66, last year. Went to my eye doctor with a droopy right eye (I thought I was having an allergic reaction). She identified it immediately- called my PCP and asked that blood tests be done ASAP. I’m lucky I guess; no spending months and years trying to figure out what was wrong. I’m mostly stable with few flares or other symptoms other than fatigue with my current medication.

MemberDiagnosed at 47. Went to eye dr for double vision, blood tests were ordered, and diagnosis was made not long after developing symptoms. I’m luckier than a lot of people who have to go years without a proper diagnosis.
I hear you, though, about the overlapping of symptoms with other conditions and issues.

MemberI was diagnosed at 67 and I’m currently 70. Yes, it’s often difficult to distinguish the source of my issues, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, or aging? It’s often hard to say. Chewing fatigue, eyelid droop, and double vision seem to clearly be MG. Shortness of breath, fatigue, and rising from a chair are less definitive. If I’m suffering from one of the more obvious symptoms at the time, I tend to attribute the others to MG also. If not, then I blame one of the other issues.

MemberI use an MG tracker weekly who has really helped me to see myself more clearly. My neurologist isn’t interested in my tracking but I know that it’s helpful to me knowing where I’m at. The last question each week ends with “given what you have noted is your current medication enough ?” That really helps me to think about the situation and decide.

MemberI was 72 when I was diagnosed. I was relatively fortunate that it took only a couple of months of testing before blood tests were done to confirm MG.

MemberI was 70 years old when I was diagnosed with symptoms of MG, January 6th, 2026. Symptoms were trouble speaking and swallowing. MRI showed mass extending over my heart. Prior to surgery my right eyelid began drooping. Had Thymectomy, April 8th found a thymoma, non-cancerous. After surgery began feeling better every day. It’s going on 6 months after surgery. reducing meds, daily taking 3, 60 mg Mestinon, 15 mg Prednisone, and 2 500 mg Cell Cept (Mycophenolate). Physically Feeling great no fatigue,
and drooping eyelid is corrected.
